Projects:

Cloud Data Management
Technology advances in communications, computation, and storage result in huge collections of data, capturing information of value to business, science, government, and society. Data volumes are currently growing faster than Moore's law. Looking forward, the exponential growth is not likely to stop. The huge size of data is imposing big challenges on infrastructure for data storage which can achieve economical scaling to even more than Petabyte, massively parallel query execution, and facilities for analytical processing. Meanwhile, the rise of large data centers and cluster computers has created a new business model, cloud-based computing, where businesses and individuals can rent storage and computing capacity, rather than making the large capital investments needed to construct and provision large-scale computer installations. Cloud-based data storage and management is a rapidly expanding business.

Flash-based Database
With the development of electronic technology, flash memory emerges as new data storage and has been widely used in embedded and portable devices such as mobile communication, industry control, Aeronautics & Astronautics and Notebook. With the rapid increase of the capacity of flash memory, data management on flash becomes a new great challenge, which incurs researches to promote the significant development on flash-based database and application, as well as the framework and structure of flash-based database. This project researches fundamental theory and design principles of flash-based database including a series of key problems such as system architecture, storage management and indexing, query processing , transaction processing.

Web Data Management

The rapid development of World Wide Web has dramatically changed the way in which information is managed and accessed. The information in Web is increasing at a striking speed. At present, there are more than 7,500 terabytes (or 550 billion web pages) of information in Web. Web information has covered all domains of human activities. This opened the opportunity for users to benefit from the available data. So Web is being concerned more and more. This brings the following projects:

XML Data Management

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple, very flexible text format derived from SGML (ISO 8879), originally designed to meet the challenges of large-scale electronic publishing. As a de facto standard of web data representation and exchange, many applications have been built on XML, for example, stock exchange, news subscribe, sensor network and so on. XML has made a great impact on Internet information management and integration. These changes have brought out many big challenges for managing semi-structured XML data.

 

Mobile Data Management
Mobile data management, which our lab focuses on, mainly includes mobile database techniques, and moving objects data management. Mobile database techniques include mobile transaction management, data caching and replication, synchronization and publication, etc. Moving objects data management includes modeling and tracking of dynamic location information, uncertainty management, spatio-temporal data access languages, indexing and scalability issues, location-dependent query processing, data mining (including traffic and location prediction), location dissemination, location privacy preserving, location fusion and synchronization.
